Standard Refrigerator Space Dimensions

Byย Kevin Sorby | Kitchen Designer & Cabinetmaker
The standard kitchen refrigerator space is 900mm wide x 1800mm high x 600mm depthย and suits a wide range of differing fridge sizes.
The concept of a standardized refrigerator cavity originated from the need for universal compatibility during the era of mass-produced housing. This standardized approach ensures that a wide variety of fridge sizes can be seamlessly integrated into a household as residents change.
Refrigerator Clearances
Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for fridge clearance spaces. Where there is no documentation, allow for a minimum of 20 mm either side of the fridge and a minimum of 50 mm above the fridge.
Overhead Fridge Cupboard Clearance
The minimum space (void) behind an overhead fridge cabinet to the wall is 200 mm. This allows for adequate air ventilation.
Note on measurements: All dimensions provided are based on standard industry practices, including guidelines established in the HIA Guide to Kitchen & Bathroom Construction.
