Standard Kitchen Tall Cabinet Dimensions

By Kevin Sorby | Kitchen Designer & Cabinetmaker

Standard kitchen tall cabinets typically feature a height of 2073 mm (+/- 20 mm) and a depth of 580 mm (excluding doors). The table below provides a breakdown of common widths and recommended door quantities.

Tall Cabinet Dimensions Table

In standard cabinetry, tall cabinet widths are generally produced in 50 mm increments, reaching a practical maximum of 1200 mm. The following table provides a breakdown of common tall cabinet widths and the standard door quantities used for each.

Please note that all tall depth dimensions refer strictly to the carcass. Door thickness is not included in these measurements.

Cabinet WidthHeightDepthDoor Qty

600 mm2073 mm580 mm1 or 2 Doors
650 mm to 1200 mm2073 mm580 mm2 Doors

This does not include the kickboard height. Tall cabinet depth ideally should not exceed 620mm (handles excluded).

How To Determine The Tall Cabinet Height

Total Height Calculation:

Total: 2073 mm

Adjusting for Real-World Variables

While 2073 mm is the standard, actual cabinet height may vary based on benchtop thickness and splashback requirements. To ensure a seamless finish and avoid awkward tile cuts, you should adjust the tall cabinet height to suit your specific materials.

Example Scenarios:

Laminate Benchtop (33mm): Using 150mm high tiles with a 2mm grout line results in a 610mm splashback. The adjusted cabinet height would be 2083 mm.

Engineered Stone (20mm): Using 100mm high tiles with a 2mm grout line results in a 614mm splashback. The adjusted cabinet height would be 2074 mm.

Tall Cabinet Maximum Door Width & Hinge Quantity

The reason for a maximum door width for a tall cabinet being 600 mm is due to the door weight loading on the door hinges. If the door was any wider, the doors hinges would tend to sag under the weight.

As the door is less than 2200 mm high AND assuming the door is less than 17kg, allow four hinges per door.

If the door weight is greater than 17 kg AND less than 22 kg, allow five hinges per door.

Note on measurements: All dimensions provided are based on standard industry practices, including guidelines established in the HIA Guide to Kitchen & Bathroom Construction.
