How To Become A Certified Kitchen Designer

By Kevin Sorby | Kitchen Designer & Cabinetmaker
Did you know that anyone can call themselves a kitchen designer, regardless of their level of experience? So, how do you become a professional, qualified, Australian-certified kitchen designer? Read on to find out.
Kitchen Designer vs. Certified Kitchen Designer
There are many people working as kitchen designers—for instance, cabinet makers, shopfitters, and designers working for large retail stores like IKEA, Bunnings, or Mitre 10. While these professionals are often highly competent and possess significant in-house training, they typically lack the specialized, formal accreditation of a Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD).
How to Become a Certified Kitchen Designer
The Certificate IV in Kitchen and Bathroom Design provides the necessary national accreditation to become a Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD Au).
You can begin your journey by enrolling in a Certificate IV in Kitchen and Bathroom Design at TAFE NSW or Designer Training Australia. This is typically a 12-month course with an approximate cost of $6,500.
What Training Do They Receive?
Australian certified kitchen designers must undergo rigorous professional training in several broad areas, including:
- Architecture and design background
- Domestic construction basics
- Plumbing, electrical, and mechanical services
- Communications, marketing, and sales
- Materials, applications, and finishes
- Elements and principles of design
- Drafting and CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Manufacturing)
- Documentation and licensing
Beyond technical skills, designers must master cabinet construction, spatial planning, and kitchen design rules. They must be able to articulate creative ideas, develop detailed plans and contracts, and understand the nuances of designing for accessibility (disabilities and special needs). Successfully managing contractors and project timelines is also a vital part of the profession.
What Happens After I Become a Certified Kitchen Designer?
Once you graduate and earn your certification, the learning doesn't stop. To maintain accreditation, you must undergo regular assessments and stay current with industry changes.
Building regulations, design trends, and technological advancements—such as smart home integration and advanced appliance technology—mean that a professional designer must be a lifelong learner to continue meeting client demands. One way to maintain this edge is to join a nationally recognized body, such as the Kitchen and Bathroom Designers Institute of Australia (KBDi).
KBDi Accreditation
The Kitchen and Bathroom Designers Institute of Australia (KBDi) is a national, not-for-profit industry group that supports the professional development of Australian designers. Membership represents a commitment to excellence and ongoing professional development.
The KBDi offers a comprehensive accreditation program designed to give consumers confidence in the skills of their designers. There are several pathways to becoming an accredited KBDi Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD Au), including providing evidence of completing specific Certificate IV qualifications or holding previous HIA/NKBA accreditation.
Applicants must also submit a completed application, pay the required fees, and provide a 'Collection of Evidence Form' to confirm their industry experience (typically requiring a minimum of two years of full-time equivalent experience).
KBDi Code of Ethics
All KBDi members must adhere to the KBDi Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct. These include:
- Striving to achieve high standards of service to the client.
- Maintaining technical currency and competency through professional development.
- Keeping abreast of current laws applicable to business duties and public policies.
- Complying with all statutes or common laws.
- Conducting business with honesty, integrity, and fair competition.
KBDi Code of Conduct
- Refraining from criticizing or damaging the reputation of KBDi members in any forum (including social media).
- Not misrepresenting membership status or using KBDi post-nominals (CKD Au) incorrectly.
- Moving to resolve client complaints as swiftly as possible.
